Toyota is currently developing cutting edge ways to ensure your safety whether you're crossing the street or behind the wheel. By looking at their vehicles from both the driver and pedestrian point of view, Toyota is determined to make the future a safe one.

One way Toyota is working to keep pedestrians safe is pre-crash with collision avoidance assist.  Sensors would allow Toyotas to veer away from a possible crash if stopping in time isn't possible. Using information gained from exterior cameras and radar technology, on-board microprocessors figure out how much braking and/or steering change is needed to avoid the impact, and then it makes the corrections.  Another method to prevent pedestrian injury is the development of the pop-up hood. The pop-up hood would reduce the risk of head injury to a pedestrian by automatically lifting the rear of the hood to increase the cushion of space between the hood surface (which is more flexible) and the engine (which is not).

To keep drivers safe, Toyota is developing partial shield adaptive high-beams that would, when an oncoming car is detected by an exterior camera, partially limit the light from high beams so that it doesn't shine directly in the face of drivers-but it would maintain near-high beam illumination of the road.  Recognizing that a growing number of drivers are aging, Toyota's most innovative, futuristic development is a cardiovascular monitor embedded in the steering wheel. Designed to detect drivers at risk of collapsing at the wheel due to a heart attack or a sudden black-out, the technology would probably click the vehicle over to an auto-pilot type feature that ensures the driver stops safely.

Although these technologies are still in the development phase and will probably be implemented overseas before they make it to the US, Tom Wood Toyota Indianapolis currently has many cutting edge Toyota vehicles available.
