To that end, we were thrilled by the recent announcement that Toyota would be investing a whopping one billion dollars over the next five years to develop new safety features that take advantage of recent advancements in artificial intelligence, or AI. Currently, driver assistance technology relies on imaging programs or radar to sense danger and initiative evasive action. Introducing an AI into this situation would add even more safety, as it could plot the best course of action, just like you or I could-only it'd do it way faster. Maybe the AI detects that some unaware driver is about to merge into you, and notices the next lane over is empty-it could automatically have your car switch over into that lane to keep you safe. If it sounds a little too science-fiction for you, keep in mind that many experts predict we're closer than we think to cars that drive all by themselves!
