Meet the 2016 Toyota Teacher of the Year Award Winner

Part of the automaker’s outreach is the Toyota Family Teacher of the Year award. Now in its 20^th year, the annual award goes to an educator who applies inter-generational approaches to get both students and their families more involved in education. With this award, the Toyota brand acknowledges the important role that educators play as well as the critical role that families play when it comes to the success children ultimately attain.

Earlier this month, Jean Ciborowski Fahey of Weymouth, MA was named the 2016 Toyota Family Teacher of the Year by the National Center for Families Learning and the Toyota brand. Ciborowski Fahey works to educate the parents of babies and young children about reading and brain development. To further her message, Ciborowski Fahey wrote a book entitled, “Make Time for Reading: a story guide for parents of babies and young children.”

Since she self-published her work, Ciborowski Fahey has printed and donated over 10,000 copies of her book to Head Start parents, mothers responsible for delivering newborns at South Shore Hospital, and local pediatric medical practices that serve low-income families. In addition to distributing her book, Ciborowski Fahey educates teachers, students, and child care providers about family literacy strategies.

As the winner of the 2016 Toyota Family Teacher of the Year award, Ciborowski Fahey will receive a $20,000 grant provided by the Toyota brand and the National Center for Families Learning. The educator plans to use the grant to reprint her book in both English and Spanish, which will make her book available to almost 7,000 additional parents.
