1280 × 852Nobody wants to think about getting into an accident, but it’s something we all need to be aware of. These tips, courtesy of the Tom Wood collision center, are good to remember if you ever get involved in a wreck:

Check-in With Everybody

While your first thought may be about the damage to your car, that’s not the most important thing to think about first. Make sure everybody in the car is okay. Even minor accidents can sometimes cause serious injuries, so if anybody is hurt, call 911.

Get Off the Road

The next thing you will want to do is try to move your car if it’s in the roadway or may otherwise be an impediment to traffic. This is only if the car is drivable; if it’s in bad shape or maybe even smoking or on fire, you should get out and away from it quickly but safely.

Talk to the Other Driver

Emotions can run high after an accident, so it’s important to remain as calm as possible when talking to the other driver. The best thing to do is to just exchange contact information and let the police and/or insurance companies deal with the accident itself. It is a good idea, however, to take pictures of the cars and scene so you can better remember what happened later.
