2026 Toyota RAV4 Specs: Overview, Changes & Release Date

The Toyota brand hails the 2026 RAV4 as the model that "puts the idea of choice front and center" – and choices you'll have. Two powertrain options, FWD or AWD, three styles, and seven trims are just the tip of the iceberg. You'll have an abundance of available upgrades, packages, and accessories to elevate every wilderness-exploring adventure or city-cruising commute, too.

Let's review some of the 2026 RAV4 highlights.

Unique Personalities: Trims will be divided into three categories for the inbound model – Core, Rugged, and Sport. Three Core models give you the RAV4 style you expect with modern updates, including a paint-matched grille and the signature Toyota hammerhead front. The Woodland model sits as the sole member of the Rugged category, offering a raised front end, split upper and lower grille, all-terrain tires, standard AWD, and other nature-loving appointments. Three Sport variants, headlined by the all-new GR Sport, are influenced by motorsports, with genuine input from the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing division. You can expect to find a GR sport-tuned suspension, GR Functional MATRIX grille, and front and rear wing-type spoilers for the range-topping GR Sport.

Electrified Everywhere: Beginning with the 2026 model year, the reliable RAV4 will be entirely electrified – it will be offered with mild-hybrid or plug-in-hybrid powertrains. This comes as no surprise, seeing as Toyota is the pioneer of hybrid automotive technology – we're thrilled to see the brand continue its plunge into the electrified space.

Approaching Release Date: At the time of writing (July 2025), an exact 2026 RAV4 release date hasn't been revealed, but the automaker says that models are expected to arrive in U.S. showrooms later this year.

Toyota RAV4 Engine

The 2026 RAV4 will measure up to the weekday grind and conquer your weekend journeys with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that's paired with the automaker's fifth-generation hybrid system. The model lineup kicks off with the mild-hybrid variant, producing either 226 or 236 horsepower (depending on your drivetrain). Opt for the plug-in-hybrid option and expect a serious specs boost to a maximum of 320 horsepower.

We're still waiting on Toyota RAV4 transmission information – but we expect it to contain some form of an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission (eCTV) like its hybrid predecessors.

Toyota RAV4 Towing Capacity

One thing the Toyota RAV4 specs sheet showcases for certain is a serious increase in towing strength. Select models with AWD will be able to haul up to 3,500 pounds when properly equipped. Considering the model's nimble, city-smart dimensions, this towing value is more than capable.

Toyota RAV4 MPG

As with some of the other specifications we've mentioned, MPG ratings for the 2026 RAV4 are not available at this time. Still, there are some safe assumptions we can make about these values – even if we can't exactly pin down their exact enumeration.

If the 2025 hybrid and PHEV models are any indication, the 2026 RAV4 will be exceptionally efficient. Just take a look at the 2025 EPA estimates:

• Hybrid: Up to an EPA-estimated 41/38/39 MPG (City/Highway/Combined)¹
• PHEV: Up to an EPA-estimated 94 MPGe (Combined)² and electric-only 42-mile range³

Toyota RAV4 Cargo Space

Cargo space is essential for SUVs, and previous iterations of the RAV4 have provided adaptive cargo holds for all of your adventuring gear and daily needs. The exact measurements aren't available for the inbound 2026 model, but we're guessing they'll be similar to the 69.8 cubic feet of maximum space available for the 2025 edition.

Regardless of the precise number, the carmaker calls the cargo space "highly usable," and we know the off-road-centric Woodland model will benefit from an all-weather cargo mat for swift cleanup. Toyota RAV4 Ground Clearance

Exact measurements for the ground clearance part of the Toyota RAV4 specs sheet aren't yet revealed, but that doesn't mean we're totally in the dark – we can shed some light on the new Toyota RAV4 ride height. For instance, as we mentioned above, the Woodland model comes with a raised front end, meaning the Rugged category will have a higher ground clearance than other model styles in the lineup. This makes sense, given its rugged nature.

Toyota RAV4 Safety Rating

Although 2026 Toyota RAV4 safety ratings and reliability scores haven't been determined at the time of this writing, we do know the latest RAV4 follows in the footsteps of its predecessors with dependable-by-design safety features. The upcoming RAV4 is the first in the Toyota lineup to launch the newest Toyota Safety Sense 4.0 suite.
